JAMES "JIM" LEROY GUNDER The Lord called James Leroy Gunder home at 87 years old on Nov. 23, 2016. Born on Dec. 2, 1928 as the only child of Mildred & Emmet Smith in Weeping Water, Nebraska, he had been a Pahrump resident for the past 24 years, and lived in Las Vegas for 30 years prior to that. Jim loved to tell stories about his early childhood on his aunt and uncle's farm, where he spent much of his time until his mom later remarried to an Army man, George Gunder, and they moved around the country. At 17, Jim managed to join the U.S. Army with a false birthdate, where he continued his travels as he served almost seven years of active duty, and worked at the Pentagon. Later, he hauled steel as a truck driver in Michigan; was in the oil/auto service industry for over 40 years, 17 as a Texaco service station owner, and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. After he retired, he loved travelling, golfing, and being a beekeeper. Though he enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing cards, and telling jokes, his greatest joys in life were his family. He will be greatly missed. Jim is survived by his beloved daughter, Connie (Mike) Doeller; 3 granddaughters: Beth (Aaron) Burke; Kelli (Roger) Bakke, and Jessica (Kyle) Stephens, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson Michael Molina. Services will be held Monday, Dec. 19th at 10:00 am at Palm Mortuary in Henderson, Nev. Burial to follow at 12:40 pm at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
