Zolin Gaphane Burson Obituary
ZOLIN BURSON Feb. 4, 1934-May 20, 2017 Zolin Gaphane Burson was born in Walsh, Colo. on February 4, 1934. His parents were Earl Roy Burson & Clover Juanita (Packard) Burson. He grew up on the family farm in Colo. and accepted Christ as Savior at a young age. He moved away to complete high school at Wheaton Academy in Ill., where he dedicated his life to serving the Lord. In 1956 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University in Texas. Only months later, Zolin was called to active duty in the Air Force and was stationed in New Mexico. His area of specialty was in nuclear physics. Zolin traveled extensively during his four years in the Air Force and ended up in Las Vegas in 1960. It was there he met and fell in love with Shirley Mullins. They married on July 29, 1961. Zolin and Shirley were blessed with three children: Zolina (born in 1962), Roy (1965), and Phyllis (1968). During their years in Las Vegas, they were active in church and both Zolin & Shirley were very involved in ministries including teaching Sunday School and serving in leadership. Having established himself as a respected nuclear physicist, Zolin had extensive involvement with the armed forces and the federal government by way of initiating, planning, and implementing emergency response, radiation shielding and health physics. In addition to his work in nuclear physics (which he loved), and his church service, Zolin also enjoyed music and was an accomplished violin player; he was good at basketball in high school; he was a skier, a golfer, a swimmer and a tennis player. Zolin's parents moved to Pahrump in 1962, and in late 1997 Zolin and Shirley chose Pahrump for their retirement home. They became members of Pahrump Community Church in 1998 and remained active in serving the Lord through the church in the years to come. He served several terms on the Deacon Board. He played violin on the worship team, and sang special music on multiple occasions. In recent years Zolin developed Alzheimer's and his once-brilliant mind became increasingly clouded. In spite of his condition, he still showed a determination to be at church on Sundays up until his decline became more severe in recent months. With the loving around-the-clock care of his wife Shirley (and then his daughter Phyllis), Zolin was able to be at home right up until the Lord called him on to heaven on May 20, 2017 at the age of 83. Zolin was preceded in death by his father: Earl Roy Burson; mother: Clover Juanita Burson; and brother: Laramie Lane Burson. He is survived by Shirley, his wife of over 55 years; his daughter: Zolina Burson, Pahrump); son: Earl Roy Burson, Las Vegas); and daughter: Phyllis Gunnoe, Pahrump). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Amber, Rachael, Hannon, Alicia, Sierra, Quinlan, Zion, and Zolin; and one great-granddaughter: Ann Marie. Zolin is highly respected and dearly loved and will be truly missed, but we look forward to a grand reunion in glory when all God's children through faith in Jesus will be forever with the Lord! Services will be held at Pahrump Community Church, 1061 E Wilson Rd, on Sat., May 27 at 10:00am.
