William John Withers, known to most as Bill, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 17, 2020, at the age of 57, from complications related to metastatic cancer. He fought cancer for just over two years, but he never lost his optimistic outlook. He will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
Born in Chicago in 1963, Bill moved with his family to Las Vegas in 1969, then to Pahrump in 1977. Over the next 43 years, he lived a full and interesting life: he helped his family run their auto parts and hardware stores, competed in rodeos, was a volunteer firefighter, participated in search and rescue, was a sheriff's deputy, worked security at the Nevada Test Site, flew small planes with his brother, bowled professionally, traveled the United States and Canada, learned to deal at Binion's Horseshoe, ran a concession stand, owned a barn building business, and was a dealer or manager in all three of Pahrump's major casinos as well as the Key Largo in Las Vegas. And that's the short list!
Bill enjoyed woodworking and building and repairing things on his property, especially if he got to use his tractor to do it. He loved animals and being outdoors. He loved going for walks, whether around the neighborhood or while traveling. He was an avid gamer, especially when he couldn't get out to his shop or the yard. More than anything, he loved spending time with his wife Jamie, whether it was going on vacation, working together on a project, or just watching television together on the couch.
Bill had a great sense of humor, whether he was playing the straight man or being a big goofball. He always had a good story to tell, or some good natured teasing to do. It wasn't a proper get together with family, in-laws, or coworkers unless Bill was giving someone a friendly hard time. It was a running joke that he was everyone's favorite a**hole.
Bill was also the most caring husband, brother, and son that anyone could ever ask for. He and Jamie married in 2005, and their marriage was one long honeymoon. She will be forever thankful to have had him in her life. Bill was always ready to use his fixing or building skills to help out his brother and sisters, and he took many trips and had many adventures with them over the years. Bill also took loving care of his elderly father for twelve years, until his father's passing in 2017.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille, and his father, William. Bill is survived by his wife Jamie, his sisters Katherine Withers, Penny Lehmuth, and Marion Withers, and his brother Michael Withers (married to Kelly). His family plans to mourn privately.
