EARL STEPHEN SCHMIDT Earl Stephen Schmidt, known to most as Steve, age 73, passed away August 18, 2020 at UMC from complications related to cancer. He was born May 12, in Middletown, Ohio. He was loved by family and friends and will be terribly missed. Upon graduating from high school in Phoenix, Ariz. in 1967, Steve joined the United States Navy. As a Vietnam Veteran completing three tours of services, Earl was devoted and committed to the U.S. military. During his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. In the line of duty, Steve was injured, and in 1983, he transferred to the Navy Reserves. While serving in the Navy, he completed electrician school. One of his commanding officers wrote the following about his performance in the reserves, "His contribution is outstanding. His ability to transfer his electrician civilian knowledge to his Navy assignment is effortless. He is an outstanding Petty Officer. A big factor in this mission's success was both Petty Officer Schmidt's military and professional knowledge." After receiving an honor discharge, Steve relocated to Long Beach Washington where he started his own electrical repair and equipment business. Later in 2004, expanding his business to Pahrump, where he would specialize in repairing RV equipment, in order to care for his mother, which he would loving do till her passing in 2018. One of Steve's colleagues and later customers once stated, "Steve is the hardest working and best diagnostician that he had ever known." Steve loved working and he strived to build positive relationships not only with his customers but his community. Throughout his life, Steve volunteered for numerous service organizations including the VFW, Loins, and the Girl Scouts. However, more than anything Steve was a devoted husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. He will be missed beyond words. Steve is preceded in death by this mother, Cora; step-father, Jay; his father, William; brothers, Mikey and Jim; son, Mitch. He is survived by his wife, Twila; brothers, Ross, Chuck, Big Mike, David, Johnny; sisters, Carol, and Patti; children, Deniece, Darla, Samantha (married to Ricky), Cassie, Cindy, Jim (married to Torrie), and Melissa (married to Mitch), 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Due to COVID-19, a private Memorial will be held at a later date.
